Papercutting is a simple art made with scissors and paper, yet its traditions run deep in many cultures. Many members of the Guild of American Papercutters work in many specific traditions, as colorful in their history as the papercuttings themselves. On the other side of the scissors, many members walk a different path by innovating new techniques for cutting papering in a contemporary style. Want to see more of their work? Want a silhouette cutter at your event? Looking for a hand-cut Jewish katubah? Architectural
- Joe Bagley, Dorchester, MA
"Paper is a simple object with a deep and complex history. Through my papercuttings, I am attempting to take this traditional and ancient craft to new levels and to introduce it to a wider modern audience. My art takes inspiration from history, architecture, and design— specifically, the timeless motifs of ancient cultures, world architecture, and the Arts and Crafts movement. My clean contemporary style shows these motifs with fresh perspective."

A Unique Haggadah Masterpiece
- Archie Granot Papercuts, Israel
Archie Granot began papercutting over 30 years ago. His creative papercuts both revive and continue a traditional Jewish art form while innovating against it.
Distinguished by multiple layers of paper. Curves and links are interwoven creating incredible depth, texture and movement to which limited and careful use of gold leaf and woven papers only adds.
- Dena Levie, New Jersey
Dena Levie has been creating Judaic papercuts for many years and has completed hundreds of pieces. She enjoys working with clients to create personalized, one of a kind artwork. Each piece is intricately cut from one piece of paper. The artwork usually encompasses names in Hebrew and/or English as well as important symbols relevant to the client’s life. The backgrounds are hand painted in a color chosen by the client.

- Lucrezia Bieler, Florida
"I am working mostly with scissors cuttings (Scherenschnitte). I create my paper cuttings in black and white because I like to concentrate fully on the composition and the dramatic effect of light versus dark. This is also the traditional form of this very old art form. The process is like woodcutting or sculpting, in that you start with a blank resource and create the art by simply cutting parts of it away. In either case, precision is paramount. Because of that, it demands full concentration. I am particularly enthused by this process when I succeed in making an extremely intricate cutting with lines that are no thicker than thread-width. All of my cuttings are cut out of a single sheet of paper. That means that the remaining design is still one piece of paper. The only instrument that I am using is a pair of small scissors."
- Sherill Anne Gross, Maryland
My artwork is made only with paper, glue, and patience.
Every part of my art is made only using cut paper; even the signature. The non-straight lines and imperfect circles that are created are layered upon each other to reveal a final realistic image. All of the work is done by hand - no stencils are used.
My artwork is what happens when you run with scissors.
- Sr. Clarice Steinfeldt, Wisconsin
Sr. Clarice began cutting Valentines, and in Spring of that year, she branched out into other designs. Her themes come from prayer, inspiration of seizing the "moment," requests from customers, nature, and studying other papercutters work, such as Walter Von Gunten's cylindrical vase which bears a stencil of one of his works.

He sometimes incorporates into the work other vintage ephemera, such as seeds packets, magazine advertisements, board game pieces, or postage stamps.
Scherenschnitte (German & Swiss)
- Catherine Winkler, Texas
Since 1982 Catherine Winkler Rayroud practices the aged art of papercutting that was imbued in her since she was a young child living in her native country of Switzerland. A highly detailed and delicate art form that is steeped in history and has inspired many great modern artists. A traditional craft that uses a single sheet of black paper folded in half that is cut in highly ornate and intricate patterns with tiny nail scissors. Each papercutting is cut in one piece. Since 1983, Catherine’s work has been presented in many solo, group and Juried exhibitions, in Switzerland, the United States and Korea and she has won many prizes and awards.

- Marie-Helene Grabman, Alexandria, Virginia
Scherenschnitte and Silhouette Portraiture are my specialties. My award-winning scissor cutting captures the art's original European intricacy but with American themes. "My artwork has been described as 'traditional Swiss-German scherenschnitte and silhouettes with elements of collage'. Each 'museum quality', original, copyrighted design is hand cut with scissors. Many works have full or partial symmetry in their composition. Some have additional papers layered to create a dimensional effect or a colorful focal point. " I exhibit in fine art/craft shows and museum exhibitions. Call my studio for a silhouette cutting appointment.

Wycinanki (Polish)
- Alisha Lahti, Seattle, WA
Inspired by wycinanki, the paper-cutting tradition from my Polish heritage, I create intricate, colorful, abstract artwork, sharing a unique cultural tradition while continuing its evolution through my own interpretations.
- Carolyn Guest, Vermont
Wycinanki Paper cuts (0riginal and traditional Polish) and silhouettes. "I became intrigued with this traditional Polish Folk art after working in Poland as an International Four-H Youth Exchange delegate. In 1984 I began cutting with the traditional Polish paper cutting tool (sheep shears) , and continue to cut with my first pair of 13 inch shears using techniques learned from Polish paper cutters.
All cuttings are unique and reflect my Vermont farm heritage or traditional Polish styles. They are mounted as note cards, book marks or framed art."
